ASA LEARN TO SWIM

ASA Learn to Swim sessions held Thursday evenings from 6pm at the City of London School for Girls, Barbican.

These are classes based on the ASA NPTS Stages 1-7 (Beginners to Pre-Competition).

National Plan for Teaching Swimming

FUNdamentals

Stage 1

1. Demonstrate safe entry into water

2. 5m forward travel*

3. 5m backward travel*

4. 5m sideward travel*

5. Scoop water and wash face

6. Shower with water

7. Stretched floating position using floats

8.  Regain upright position from back with support

9. Regain upright position from front with support

10. Push and glide to or from wall

11. Pool game (to explore buoyancy and balance)

12. Demonstrate understanding of pool rules

13. Demonstrate safe exit from the water

* can be swum using aids or other support and can be achieved walking

Stage 2

1. Jump into pool safely

2. Blow bubbles three times rhythmically (nose and mouth submerged)

3 Regain upright position from back without support

4. Regain upright position from front without support

5. Push and glide from wall on the back

6. Push and glide from wall on the front

7. Travel 5m on back (using aides if needed)

8. Travel 5m on front (using aides if needed)

9. Rotate front to back and then gain upright position

10. Rotate back to front and then gain upright position

Stage 3

1. Jump into pool and submerge

2. Sink, push away from wall on side and maintain streamlined position

3. Push and glide on the front, arms extended, and log roll to back

4. Push and glide on the back, arms extended, and log roll to front

5. Travel on front, tuck and rotate to return on the back

6. Fully submerge and pick up object

7. Answer three questions correctly on the Water Safety Code

8. Travel 10m supine

9. Travel 10m prone

10.  Exit water safely

Stage 4

1. Demonstrate an understanding of buoyancy

2. Perform a tucked float for 5 seconds

3.Perform a sequence (minimum of 3) of changing shapes

while floating on the surface

4. Push and glide from wall to pool floor

5. Kick 10m Backstroke*

6. Kick 10m Frontcrawl*

7. Kick 10m Butterfly (prone or supine)*

8. Kick 10m Breaststroke supine*

9. Kick 10m Breaststroke prone*

10. 5m head first scull

11. Travel on back and roll to front

12. Travel on front and roll to back

13. 10m of choice stroke

*  One float can be used to assist

Stage 5

1. Perform horizontal stationary scull on back (back layout)

2. 5m foot first scull

3. Perform sculling sequence with partner to include directional change and rotation for 30 – 45 seconds

4. Tread water for 30 seconds (hands in water)

5.  Perform 3 different shaped jumps into water

6. 10m Backstroke

7. 10m Frontcrawl

8. 10m Breaststroke

9. 10m Butterfly

10. Perform handstand for 3 seconds

11. Perform tucked forward somersault

12. Demonstrate action for getting help

Stage 6

1. Demonstrate understanding of preparation for exercise

2. Sink, push off wall on the side, glide, kick and rotate into Backstroke

3. Sink, push off wall on the side, glide, kick and rotate into Frontcrawl

4. Swim 10m with clothes on

5. Swim Frontcrawl to show at least 6 rhythmical breaths

6. Swim Breaststroke to show at least 6 rhythmical breaths

7. Swim Butterfly to show at least 3 rhythmical breaths

8. 25m choice stroke

9. Perform ‘shout and signal’ rescue

10. Perform a surface dive (vertical dive either head first or foot first)

11. Exit pool without using steps

Stage 7

1. 25m Backstroke

2. 25m Frontcrawl

3. 25m Breaststroke

4. 25m Butterfly

5. Perform a movement sequence with at least 3 swimmers to include: i) head first and foot first scull; ii) somersault and log roll; iii) 3 different floating shapes; iv) egg beater.  To last 1 minute and appear smooth. Transition between skills linked by sculling or stroke.

6. Perform sitting dive

7. 50m continuous swim using 1 stroke

8. 100m swim using 3 different strokes

9. Tread water for 30 seconds using egg beater kick

10. Complete an obstacle course of at least 4 objects.  Feet off floor throughout
